<image:caption>A finished watercolor which has been brushed onto a white mesh screen.* Once the watercolor is completely dry it will be ready for printing. Let’s take a look at the process. *Mesh count refers to the weave density of the screen mesh. The higher the count the denser the weave. The mesh count to use for this process should be anywhere from 195 to 230.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Screenprinted watercolor monoprints - Preparing your screen</image:title>
<image:caption>The screen should be large enough to accommodate your image. You will also need at least 2” of space on all sides. I had a large screen on hand which had extra room at the top which I covered with shelf liner. Draw a format opening lightly in pencil. This area will remain open and ready to accept watercolor. Mask the area around the format opening with wide, clear packing tape. The screen should be attached to a sturdy base, such as coated plywood, with metal hinges.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Screenprinted watercolor monoprints - Place a drawing under the screen</image:title>
<image:caption>A drawing can be placed under the screen and very lightly traced onto it. The fewer and lighter the lines the better as graphite will print along with the color. You can also work freely without any guide. Once the drawing is complete place risers of cardboard under the screen so that the watercolor doesn’t touch the surface underneath it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I used blue painter’s tape at left and bottom to keep the paper positioned in place. Short pieces of low tack tape are placed at right and left edges to prevent the paper from sticking to the screen when it is lifted after printing. The screen is held onto the plywood base with hinges. 100% rag paper (all cotton)* is best. *Arches Cover, Rives BFK, Somerset and Stonehenge</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pour or spoon Speedballs’s Transparent Base along the bottom of your image. Lift the screen up slightly so that it is not touching the paper below and then gently pull the transparent base across the painting to the top. This is called “flooding” the screen. Gently pull the squeegee over the image a few times until you see the color begin to dissolve into the transparent base ending with the squeegee at the top. Then lower the screen and pull the squeegee across image with a slow, steady, firm pressure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I chose the DIY option. After selecting a square corner treatment I selected one of the DIY layout options for the front of my card. The guidelines stress the importance of choosing a font size of 8 pt or larger. I varied the sizes with the top and largest line at 12 pt and the smallest line at 8.5. I also varied the colors to increase readability. I chose a font which was similar to the font used on my website. There is also an option for adding a color to the background which I did not use. The fronts of your cards including the image if you choose to include one, will all be the same.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Part 2: DIY dry mounting pastel paper onto foamcore continued... - Coming up next: follow up tutorial on creating a finished painting from a drawing which does not have a background…</image:title>
<image:caption>I work from live models to create drawings usually completed in under 30 minutes. These may or may not have background information which the finished painting will need. I use different strategies to create a full composition. In the follow up blog post I’ll demonstrate how I created background interest to complete this work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cut the pastel paper to desired size If you will be matting your finished work: The size of the foam core will be larger than the pastel paper. Measure the foam core to accomodate the size of the pastel and the width of its mat border. If you will not be matting your finished work: cut the pastel paper, foam core support and double tack film all the same size.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Part 1: DIY dry mounting pastel paper onto foamcore using double tack film - Adhering double tack film to a support…</image:title>
<image:caption>The double tack film has a glossy protective paper on both its front and backsides. Begin by pulling off only an inch or two along the shorter side of the film. Holding the film at its corners place along the pencil line edge you’ve drawn, matching the short side of the film to the shorter guideline edge. Gently press with your hand to tap paper down against the support. Once down - its down for good, so go slowly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Part 1: DIY dry mounting pastel paper onto foamcore using double tack film - Removing top covering of film…</image:title>
<image:caption>Once the film has been smoothly attached to the foam core support you’re ready to remove the protective top layer. Proceed slowly by removing only a few inches, folding it down upon itself and then position the pastel paper holding it by its corners, along the short side. Continue to tug at and pull the top protective paper from the film while gently tapping down the pastel paper as you go. Work slowly until the full sheet of protective paper is removed and the pastel paper is adhered.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Part 1: DIY dry mounting pastel paper onto foamcore using double tack film - Adhered pastel paper</image:title>
<image:caption>The heavy, non floppy, weight of the sanded paper aids in the process of laying it down smoothly. In the case of the art shown at left I lightly drew my composition onto the paper in Nupastel before it was dry mounted. Once dry mounted I overlaid the drawing with newsprint for the final pressing and smoothing out of the paper onto the foam core underneath. This also protects your skin from the abrasive surface of the sanded paper.</image:caption>
